The United Nations was formed in 1945 at the close of World War II, as the victorious Allied Forces joined together forty-five nations in San Fransisco to formulate a solution to the scourge of war. The resulting United Nations Organization was to be a beacon of hope for the future. As a global forum where all nations had a say, it was to be the stopper of wars forever more. Today, 192 nations form the UN, representing the vast majority of the world.
Six organs comprise the United Nations: The General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, the now defunct Trusteeship Council, and the Security Council. From New York City, the UN watches over the world day and night, in times of peace and war.
